They opened the dining-room door. Mr Potter was sitting at a table under a green lampshade, finishing a bowl of soup.

‘That tasted very good,’ he said. ‘We should certainly have supper here, and stay the night. I thought I’d better try some of the food before we decided.’

‘Did you call out “help”?’ asked Jody.

Mr Potter shook his head. ‘I was asking the waiter for a second helping.’

‘I suppose what we thought was chains or a skeleton was Mr Potter’s spoon clinking,’ said Thomas. ‘We’ve been idiots. Come on, let’s go back to the bus.’

They all went down the passage. ‘We thought you were an ogre,’ Jody said to Mr Potter.

‘Yes,’ said Pete, ‘and we thought the hotel was haunted. We were quite sure it was full of horrible ghosts.’

Suddenly Jody screamed. ‘It is haunted. Look at those ghastly faces!’

She pointed at the carpet. Two ghoulish faces were grinning up at them.

Mr Potter bent down. ‘Quite a good likeness,’ he said to Thomas and Pete. It was their photograph, which had fallen out of the machine on to the carpet.

‘You idiots!’ said Jody. ‘Your photo looks like the ugliest ghosts in the world.’

‘Well,’ said Thomas, ‘it seems as though there aren’t any spooks around after all. This is just an ordinary hotel.’

But when they got back to the bus, Mr Majeika and Class Three had vanished.
